What a machine actually costs after the invoice is paid

Two quotations arrive. One is fifteen per cent cheaper. Most buyers stop there, and a good number of them regret it within two years — not because the cheaper machine was bad, but because the comparison left out everything that happens after delivery.

The cost of an hour stopped

This is the number to work out first, because every other maintenance decision depends on it. Take a normal production day, divide by the hours, and you have what an hour of downtime costs. Once you have that figure, the argument for keeping a spare belt on the shelf usually makes itself.

A machine waiting six weeks for a part costs more than it ever saved at purchase. That single piece of arithmetic is the whole case for buying from a supplier with engineers and stock in the country, which we set out on the service page.

Consumables are the quiet budget

Inserts, nozzles, optics, tips, wire and assist gas do not appear on a quotation, and over a few years they routinely exceed the difference between two machines. Before comparing prices, ask what the machine consumes per hour of cutting and whether those items are stocked locally or ordered from abroad each time.

Spare parts availability beats warranty length

A long warranty is worth very little while the part is on a boat. The question that matters is simpler: is the bearing, the drive, the optic actually in the country? The operator is part of the cost

A machine run on conservative settings by someone who was never properly trained produces a fraction of what it can. That gap does not appear in any budget, and it is usually larger than the consumables line. Training on handover is part of the supply for a reason.

A fairer way to compare two quotations

• Purchase price, delivered and installed
• Consumables per hour of actual cutting
• Assist gas, if the process uses it
• Whether wear parts are held in Egypt or imported per order
• Who answers the phone in month eighteen

Add those up over three years and the fifteen per cent often changes sides.
