How to choose a fiber laser cutter for an Egyptian workshop

Almost every fiber laser enquiry starts with the same question: how many kilowatts do I need? It is the wrong question, and answering it properly takes about ten minutes and three numbers you already have.

Start with the thickness you cut every week

Not the maximum on the datasheet — the thickest sheet that actually goes through your shop in a normal week. Sizing for the rare heavy job means paying for power that idles most days, and paying for it again in electricity.

If most of your work is thin to medium sheet that goes straight to welding or paint, the edge quality matters more than the headline power figure. Assist gas is the running cost nobody quotes

This is the line item that surprises people. Nitrogen produces a clean, weldable, paintable edge on stainless and aluminium, and it costs considerably more per hour than the electricity the machine draws. Oxygen is cheaper on mild steel but leaves an oxide layer that the next process has to deal with.

Decide which of the two your parts require before you decide on a machine, because it changes the economics more than the purchase price does.

Reflective materials must be specified from the start

Aluminium, brass and copper reflect enough energy back into the source that a machine not specified for them can be damaged. If your material mix includes any of these, say so at the quotation stage rather than after delivery.

Extraction, chilling and power are part of the machine

Fume extraction and the chiller are not optional accessories, and neither is a three-phase supply that can carry the load. We survey the floor before quoting so none of this arrives as a surprise on installation day.

What to have ready before you ask for a price

  • The thickest material you cut in a normal week, and in what
  • Whether the cut edge is welded, painted, or left as it is
  • Your sheet size, and how sheets arrive at the machine
  • Your incoming electrical supply
